Voice pitch test
Read the sentence below out loud for 10 seconds. You'll see your average speaking pitch in Hz, the musical note it sits on, and how much your pitch moves when you talk.
Read this in your normal speaking voice:"I usually start my day with a coffee and a short walk. It clears my head, and by the time I'm back, I know exactly what I want to get done."
Use a quiet room. Takes 10 seconds.
Typical adult men 85–155 HzTypical adult women 165–255 Hz

How the test works
Your pitch is the fundamental frequency of your voice: how many times per second your vocal folds vibrate. The test listens through your microphone, estimates that frequency about 60 times a second while you read, ignores silences, and reports the median, so a single squeak or cough doesn't skew the result.
The pitch range is the distance between your lower and upper pitch while speaking (the 10th to 90th percentile), in semitones. It's the closest single number to what listeners hear as "monotone" versus "expressive".
What is a normal speaking pitch?
Typical adult speaking pitch is commonly given as roughly 85–155 Hz for men and 165–255 Hz for women. These are broad averages with lots of healthy variation, and many voices sit between or outside them.
| Average pitch | Nearest note | How it often comes across |
|---|---|---|
| Below 100 Hz | below G2 | Very low and deep |
| 100–150 Hz | G2–D3 | Low to mid; typical for many men |
| 150–200 Hz | D3–G3 | Mid; overlaps higher male and lower female voices |
| 200–260 Hz | G3–C4 | Mid to high; typical for many women |
| Above 260 Hz | above C4 | High |
Is a lower voice better?
Not on its own. What people tend to hear as confident or attractive is a relaxed, resonant voice at the low end of your comfortable range, with enough variation to sound engaged. Pushing your pitch down usually backfires: it strains the voice and tips into vocal fry. See how to make your voice deeper naturally and how to fix vocal fry.
What does my pitch range mean?
- Under 4 semitones: quite flat. Listeners may hear you as bored or tired even when you're not. Try the drills in how to stop sounding monotone.
- 4–8 semitones: natural conversational movement.
- Over 8 semitones: expressive and animated, which is great for storytelling and on camera.
Reading a script tends to flatten your range compared with free conversation, so treat the number as a baseline to compare against next time.
Tips for an accurate reading
- Use a quiet room and your phone's or laptop's built-in microphone. Bluetooth headsets compress audio.
- Speak at your normal volume and pitch, as if you were on a call.
- Take the test twice; the second reading is usually more relaxed.
Questions
What is a normal speaking pitch?
Typical adult speaking pitch is commonly given as roughly 85 to 155 Hz for men and 165 to 255 Hz for women, with wide individual variation. Children speak higher. Anywhere in or near these ranges is normal.
How accurate is an online voice pitch test?
For a clear voice in a quiet room, the average pitch is usually within a few hertz of what speech-analysis software reports. Background noise, a very breathy or creaky voice, and Bluetooth headsets can make readings less reliable, so take the test twice.
Is a lower voice better?
Not by itself. Listeners respond to a relaxed, resonant voice spoken at the low end of your comfortable range, with enough pitch variation to sound engaged. Forcing your pitch below its natural range strains the voice and often produces vocal fry.
Can I change my speaking pitch?
You cannot change the anatomy that sets your natural range, but most people can speak a little lower and fuller by releasing throat tension, breathing lower and building chest resonance, and can sound more expressive by practising wider pitch movement on key words.
Is my recording uploaded?
No. The test analyzes your microphone input in your browser with the Web Audio API. Nothing is recorded to a file or sent to a server.
