Voicemaxxing: what works, what is nonsense and a safe routine

Updated

Short answer

Voicemaxxing is the online trend of deliberately training your voice to sound deeper, stronger or more attractive, usually aimed at young men. The useful part is ordinary voice training: breath support, humming, resonance, pace and clarity. The bad part is forcing your pitch down, which research suggests does not make men more attractive to women and which can contribute to muscle tension dysphonia. Train your habits, not your anatomy, and stop if your throat hurts.

Voicemaxxing is the online trend of deliberately training your voice to sound deeper, stronger or more attractive. Some of the advice is ordinary voice training with a new name, and the rest ranges from pointless to harmful. We make a voice training app, so weigh our view accordingly; the sources are linked so you can check them.

What is voicemaxxing?

Voicemaxxing means trying to get the most out of your voice through exercises, habits and apps, most often to sound lower and more masculine. It is mainly aimed at young men, and its promoters claim that a deeper voice brings more success with women. The useful techniques in it work for anyone, whatever their voice or goal.

The typical package mixes humming, diaphragmatic breathing and hydration with neck crunches, mewing, mouth taping and a flatter, more monotone delivery. A group of Australian researchers described this mix as legitimate voice training alongside "sciencey-sounding bro folklore" (Cornell, Fisher and Brooks, 2026, The Conversation).

Where did the term come from?

Nobody can be credibly credited with coining "voicemaxxing." It follows the same pattern as looksmaxxing: -maxxing is a slang suffix meaning to optimize a trait, which came out of incel forums in the 2010s and later spread through TikTok.

What can be dated:

  • March 6, 2021: the earliest use we could verify is a thread titled "Ultimate voicemaxxing guide" on a looksmaxxing forum. Earlier uses may well exist.
  • August 2026: the article linked above covered the word for a general audience, describing a TikTok-driven trend with its own apps and downloadable guides.

Those forum roots explain the tone of much of the advice. You can take the useful exercises without taking the worldview that came with them.

What works and what is nonsense

The parts of voicemaxxing that work are the parts voice teachers already use: breath, resonance, relaxation, pace and clarity. The parts that do not work try to change your anatomy or force a sound your voice does not naturally make. Use this table as a filter for any guide or video you come across.

Does a deeper voice really make you more attractive?

On average, women rate naturally lower male voices as more attractive, but that does not mean pushing your own voice down will have the same effect. The research on naturally low voices is real. The research on deliberately faked ones points the other way.

Here is what the studies support:

  • Natural pitch has an association. A meta-analysis of 96 studies found that voice pitch, height and testosterone predicted men's mating outcomes, while strength and muscularity were the strongest predictor (Lidborg, Cross and Boothroyd, 2022, eLife). This is a correlation across populations, and it says nothing about training.
  • Faking it does not reliably help. When people deliberately altered their pitch, exaggerating a sex-typical voice did not necessarily raise attractiveness, although lowered voices were rated as more dominant (Fraccaro et al., 2013, Animal Behaviour).
  • Listeners notice. People can detect voices deliberately shifted to sound bigger or smaller, and they correct their judgments when they do (Pisanski and Reby, 2021, Nature Communications).

So a forced low voice may sound more dominant, particularly to other men, without gaining the thing the trend promises. Be skeptical of apps that attach a number to attraction: the same 2026 article reports one claiming that "80% of female attraction is determined by voice," a figure we could not trace to any study. What listeners respond to is broader than depth, as our guide to making your voice more attractive explains.

What are the risks of forcing a low pitch?

The main risk is voice strain. Habitually speaking at an artificially low pitch can contribute to muscle tension dysphonia, a condition where tight, inefficient throat muscles leave your voice tired, strained or hoarse even though the vocal folds themselves look normal.

Duke Health lists speaking at a pitch too high or too low for you among the causes, alongside poor breath support and forcing the throat muscles. The main treatment is voice therapy with a speech pathologist.

Use a simple stop rule. If your throat feels tight, scratchy or tired after practice, you pushed too hard. Stop for the day and come back gentler. Pain is never part of the process.

A realistic voicemaxxing routine

A sensible routine takes about five minutes a day and works on the sound you already have. Do these in order, gently, once a day, and measure your progress with weekly recordings rather than by how impressive you feel in the moment.

  1. Low breath (1 minute, 4 reps). Breathe in through your nose for 4 counts, letting your belly and lower ribs expand. Exhale on a steady "sss" for 8 to 12 counts. Keep your shoulders still.
  2. Yawn-sigh (1 minute, 6 reps). Start a real yawn to open the back of your throat, then sigh out "haaa" from a middle pitch to a low one. Stop before it creaks. Finding where it creaks shows you your floor, and your speaking voice belongs comfortably above it.
  3. Chest hum into words (1 minute, 8 phrases). Hum at a comfortable low-middle pitch with a hand on your upper chest, then open into a word on the same note: "mmm-morning," "mmm-my name is." Do not press for extra depth.
  4. Pace and pause (1 minute). Read four sentences aloud with a full second of silence after each one. Land each sentence on a settled, falling note, keeping enough air to say the last word clearly.
  5. Record it (1 minute). Read the same 30-second passage every time, so your recordings can be compared directly.

What to work on over 4 weeks

WeekFocusHow to check it
1Get baselines and learn the routineNote your numbers from the voice pitch test and speaking rate test
2Breath and clean sentence endingsLess creak on the last words of your recording
3Resonance at your comfortable pitchA fuller tone at the same volume, with no throat fatigue
4Using it in real calls and conversationsA recording of real talk sounds closer to your drills

Do not chase a lower number on the pitch test. Your pitch naturally shifts with mood, volume and time of day, and it is one reading of one part of your voice. A good result is a voice that sounds fuller, steadier and more relaxed, even if the Hz figure barely moves.

How do you measure voicemaxxing progress?

Measure things you can actually hear and change, and compare yourself only with your own earlier recordings. Useful measures include pitch range, pace, pauses, filler words, vocal fry, volume and steadiness. Attractiveness is not one of them, because it depends on who is listening.

Free browser tools cover pitch, pace, pauses and filler words. Voceris scores nine measures, including depth, resonance, stability and vocal fry, from a short reading and builds a daily plan around them, which helps if you want to see whether you are gaining depth or only adding creak. Treat any score as a trend line. No app, ours included, can tell you how attractive you will sound to a particular person.

If your recordings make you wince, you are in good company, and part of that reaction is physics: see why you hate the sound of your voice.

What can voicemaxxing not change?

Training cannot change your anatomy. The basic pitch of your voice depends mainly on the length and mass of your vocal folds, which testosterone shapes during puberty, and exercises do not alter that. A young teenager whose voice is still changing should simply leave pitch alone.

What you can change is plenty: your habitual pitch within your comfortable range, tension, breath, resonance, pace, pauses and articulation. People who speak high because of nerves may hear a big shift. People already at their natural pitch will gain mostly in tone and steadiness, and that is still a real gain.

When to see a professional

See an ENT doctor or speech-language pathologist if you have hoarseness lasting more than two to three weeks, pain when speaking, frequent voice loss or a sudden voice change. If you want a substantial change in how your voice is perceived, including for gender-affirming reasons, a speech-language pathologist who specializes in voice can do it far more safely than a forum guide. And if worry about your voice has started to shape how you live, that is worth raising with a doctor or therapist too.

Questions

What does voicemaxxing mean?

Voicemaxxing means trying to get the most out of your voice through exercises, apps and habits, usually to sound deeper and more attractive. The word combines voice with the internet slang suffix -maxxing, which means optimizing a trait.

Does voicemaxxing actually work?

Partly. Training can improve breath support, resonance, pace, clarity and how steady you sound. It cannot change the length and mass of your vocal folds, and deliberately pushing your pitch lower has not been shown to make a man's voice more attractive to women.

Is voicemaxxing safe?

Humming, breathing work and relaxed resonance exercises are low risk when done gently. Habitually speaking below your comfortable pitch can contribute to muscle tension dysphonia, and using testosterone or steroids to change your voice carries wider health risks.

Is there a voicemaxxing test?

There is no standard test, and no app can tell you how attractive a particular person will find your voice. You can measure real things such as pitch, pitch range, words per minute, pauses and filler words, then compare yourself with your own earlier recordings.

How long does voicemaxxing take?

Expect a fuller sound during exercises within days, and new habits in everyday speech after several weeks of short daily practice. Results vary, and no routine can promise a specific outcome.
